This article details the brilliant work of Biran Foote and Joseph Yoder, who examined patterns of system evolution, identifying several distinct patterns that describe systems in various states of chaos. This article describes how the author used knowledge of these patterns to influence the outcome of a large enterprise project that could otherwise have cost the company tens of thousands of dollars in support costs before it would have inevitably failed. The result was that the company completely rethought the problem, and ultimately implemented an entirely different solution.
